We are very happy to present the happenings in Surandai in the year 2008.
Education:

1. 26 acre of land was donated by “Sivagurunathapuram Hindu Nadar Mahimai Committee” to the Government to build “GOVERNMENT ARTS AND SCIENCE COLLEGE” in Surandai. Currently the college was functioning at “Sri Parasakthi Matriculation School – Surandai.
2. The Minister for Higher Education has laid foundation stone to build the College in Surandai.
3. Also the Government sanctioned Rs . 3.33 Cr to raise the building

Bus facility:

Bus facilities has been operated in the following routes..
1. Surandai – Tirunelveli (Via – Pavoorchatram)
2. Alangulam – Thirupoor (Via – Surandai)
3. Surandai – Alagiapandiapuram
4. Surandai – Puliarai (Via – Kurumbalaperi)
5. Surandai – Kollam

Business:

1. “Adi Thallupadi” sales were happened in all the textile shops in a very grand manner.
2. “Trader’s Association” celebrated its 25th Anniversary.
3. More that 50 Shops were opened for business.
4. In midst of rise in Gold Price, Surandai has become a popular area to buy Gold.
5. Incoming of vegetables to the Daily Market has risen rapidly.

Agriculture:

1. A new fertilizer shop has been opened at the market road.
2. Harvesting of Tomato and Onion was very high when compared to the previous year.
3. Farmers were disappointed due to the price fall in the local markets for major commodities when it was ready to sell.

Climate:

1. Usually “Masi” and “Panguni” are sunny months for Surandai. But in 2008, this became an unusual one.
2. From “Masi 29” to “Panguni 09” (i.e.) (March 12-22) there was a heavy rain which affected the normal life of Surandai people.

Service of Trusts:

1. On 12-12-2008 YMCA “Athilingam Charitabel Trust” combined with “IMA” (Indian Medical Association) Surandai Territory, has organized a free medical camp at “Poigai”. Dr. R. Sellaiya has sponsored to this camp.
2. Free dhotis and saris were distributed to 300 poor people by the “Seesha” trust.

Development plans:

1. Under the “Nabard” RDFI scheme a bridge was constructed and opened on 25-07-2008 at Keela Surandai. This helps people to cross “Anuman River” and to worship “Thevalok Matha Kovil”.

“Anmegam” News:

1. First in the history, all community people celebrated “Sivakamasundari Amman Sameetha Verapandeeswarar Kovil” festival. This festival was celebrated on “Mandakappadi” basis.
2. It was decided to build “Sivakamasundari sameetha Sivagurunathan Kovil” at Sivagurunathapuram and it is being constructed at the Murugan temple. The first festival also celebrated on the same year itself.
3. On behalf of Surandai “Sekaram” “Sothira pandigai” was celebrated at the church located at Kamarajar Nagar.
4. A couple from Surandai visited “Hajj” in the last year.

Renovation work at temples:

1. Tower work above the “Karuvarai” and the floor work is being held at “Srinivasaperumal Kovil” located near “Anuman River”
2. “Thevalok Matha Kovil” renovation work is going on at an estimate of Rs. 25 Lakh.
3. A welcome arch for Surandai at Keela Surandai road was constructed by Dr. Vijayan.
4. Renovation work is going on at the Keela Surandai church. This Renovation work has been started due to the lack of space. Except the tower, all other parts are being renovated by the committee members.
5. An “ Visvarubha Anchaneyar” statue was paced at “Theradi Madaswamy Kovil” located on the way to “Sambavarvadakarai”.
6. A new temple for “Seevalaperiar” was constructed near “Alaguparvathi Amman Kovil”.
7. A new temple for “Kolathur Iyyanar Kovil” was constructed on the way to “Rettaikulam”.
8. A new “Muthumariamman Kovil” was constructed at “Varakunanathapuram”.
9. A new “Vinayakar” temple was constructed at “Aladippatti”.

Others:

1. A new branch of “Aravind eye hospital” was started.
2. Mr. Muthukumar was elected as the new DMK “Nagara seyalalar” for Surandai.
3. The follower of “Ahilla therattu thantha thamaraipathi Ayya Vaikundaswamy”, Mr. G N Sivachandran visited Surandai and its surrounding 7 times for the “Anmeeka sotpolivu”
4. Totally 5 people died on the eve of the main festival at “Mupidari Amman kovil” Surandai. In this Mr. Arunachalanadar (aged above 100) is also one of those five.
5. Business man Mr. Janarthanan (Ponvelan Textiles) also died in the last year.
6. In the starting of the last year, more than 50 cows were died due to an unidentified disease.
7. One of the “Nattamai” of “Mupidari Amman kovil”, Mr. Thangasamy also passed away.
